Changing contemporary art formats and an experimental cultural program are launched on two floors of the bunker. Here, disciplines, positions and cultural actors are linked with each other in innovative ways. A lively, open exchange can arise, which emotionalizes, opens spaces and releases thoughts.
Artistic positions, questions and answers form a dialogue with the architecture and history of the site, which is special in every respect.

WITH WORKS BY JAN ALBERS, JULIUS VON BISMARCK AND SINTA WERNER In the exhibition "Fiction of Reality", the "Bilker Bunker" invites you to take a walk on the fine line between the imaginary and the real. The artistic positions of Jan Albers, Julius von Bismarck and Sinta Werner play with our perception. We need to get closer, to get involved in order to distinguish appearance from reality and to track down the fiction of reality. Where does fiction end and reality begin? Duration: 17 May - 14 July 2024 Vernissage: 17 May from 6 pm
With works by: Rimma Arslanov, Astrid Busch, Aurel Dahlgrün, Tomas Kleiner
Expansive parachute installations, oversized ice floes, fantastic visual worlds and veiling curtains - Tomas Kleiner, Aurel Dahlgrün, Rimma Arslanov and Astrid Busch use these artistic stylistic devices to create an impressive transformation of the exhibition space of the "Bilker Bunker". The fascinating metamorphosis of the bunker through cross-room works invites visitors to immerse themselves and discover, to pause, linger and marvel - in an immersive and contemplative reception. Spaces of experience are created, intermediate worlds are opened up, the different dimensions enter into dialogue with each other.

HARALD NAEGELI IN DÜSSELDORF BILK
They have always adorned the Düsseldorf city centre: running stick figures, strutting flamingos, triangular double eyes. Unfortunately, many of Harald Naegeli's famous spray drawings have been removed. However, they can still be found in the Bilk district, where Naegeli lived for almost thirty years. They can now be rediscovered here as well as in the »Bilker Bunker«: through an audio tour, on the concrete walls of the bunker, as a new edition in dialogue with sprayer "Magic" from Düsseldorf and in two exclusive editions.
The work "Magic vs. Naegeli '96", which is complemented by two selected screen prints and photo editions with Naegeli's motifs, can be seen from the 30th of November as part of the exhibition »From shelter to free space«.
Further works by Naegeli can be discovered at any time on your own and with your own ears: through the digital map and in the audio tour through the Düsseldorf district of Bilk.

THE »BILKER BUNKER«IN THE COURSE OF TIME
As »air-raid shelter No. 25« the »Bilker Hochbunker« was built in 1942 at the corner of Aachener Strasse and Karolingerstrasse. Responsible for the planning was the architect Carl Krieger (1875-1957). With the conversion into an art and cultural space by Bilker Bunker gGmbH and in the context of the opening year, the history of the building can be experienced in a special way: digitally and emotionally.
Reports by contemporary witnesses, historical documents and video installations invite visitors to follow the eventful history and learn more about what being in the bunker actually meant and what the situation was like for those seeking protection. During this process, values such as freedom, democracy, pluralism and tolerance are to be consolidated in the consciousness of the visitors.
